マザーグースの歌のひとつです。
なかなか勇ましいリズムで、楽しく歌えます。
個人的には9月の終わりが近づくと歌いたくなる歌です。
下の歌詞も、サイトに載せている動画も、船長さんの
「そんなことしたらダメ！」というのが2番に来ていますが、
娘が小さい時に聞いたものは、2番に船員さん達が
頭を海につけて、それを見た船長さんが3番で叱る
という展開でした。そして、船は沈みませんでした！
この歌も他の歌と同様、メロディーや歌詞が微妙に違った
バージョンが多数あるようです。
歌詞では上の物語の展開の違いの他、船の進行が
sails と現在形のものや sailed と過去形のもの、
on the all(e)y all(e)y oh と "on" を使うものと
through the all(e)y all(e)y oh と "through" を
使うものなどがあります。
